About Breastfeeding-Friendly Workplace

Lane County Public Health (LCPH) in conjunction with the Breastfeeding Coalition of Lane County (BFCLC), WIC, and Health Babies, Healthy Communities (HBHC) recognizes the importance of breastfeeding in reducing chronic disease and increasing the health of our community.  Unfortunately, many women discontinue breastfeeding very early due to the lack of support from family, friends or workplace.  For women working outside the home, a supportive workplace environment can make the difference!

Benefits to becoming a Breastfeeding –Friendly Workplace  (from “The Business Case for Breastfeeding”):

  • Lower medical costs and health insurance claims for breastfeeding  employees and their infants (up to three times less for breastfeeding employees);
  • Reduced turnover rates (86-92% of breastfeeding employees returning to work after childbirth when a lactation support program is provided compared to the national average of 59%);
  •  Lower absenteeism rates (up to half the number of 1 day absences);
  •  Improved productivity and increased employee morale and loyalty to the company.

Becoming a Breastfeeding-Friendly Workplace involves:

  • Completing an assessment of current policies and procedures
  • Providing adequate and appropriate time and space for employees to breastfeed their babies and express milk
  • Implementing workplace policies that support women in their efforts to breastfeed
  • Providing education and information to employees about breastfeeding
  • Promoting the new “breastfeeding-friendly” policies and procedures to all employees
  • Lane County Public Health and Breastfeeding Coalition of Lane County staff will provide all the technical assistance, information and resources you will need to become a “Breastfeeding-Friendly Workplace”– at no charge to you!
